Side effects from hair loss medications are generally rare, mild, and reversible. Here’s what you should know about the two treatments:
Oral Minoxidil:
- Possible Side Effects: Some users may experience excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis) in areas other than the scalp, fluid retention, and low blood pressure.
- Normal Hair Shedding: It’s common for old hair to fall out within the first 2 months—this is actually a positive sign! It indicates that the medication is working and your hair is entering a new growth cycle.
Finasteride:
- Clinical Safety: In clinical trials, 98.6% of men did not experience any serious side effects from Finasteride.
- Rare Side Effects: While side effects can occur, they are very uncommon. In rare cases, some men may experience sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, or ejaculation disorders. Most of these side effects are associated with the higher 5mg dose used for treating enlarged prostates, and studies have shown no significant link between Finasteride for male pattern baldness (MPB) and sexual side effects.
If you have any concerns about potential side effects, please reach out to a MANUAL clinician for guidance. If you believe you are experiencing serious side effects, contact your GP immediately.
